How to get reviewed in OOBR

Getting a review in OOBR is as easy as becoming a member, since we review works by members only. (This practice may seem odd, but it developed as a necessity when it turned out that producers were just Xeroxing their complimentary copies and sharing them with the cast, so no one was supporting the magazine.) This is especially important now that OOBR is free and online only.

We don't guarantee a review, since our reviewer could be struck by lightning or come down sick; but we manage 95 percent of the time, especially with new members.

Do we guarantee a good review? Hardly. Look through the archives and see the spread of opinions! If our reviews weren't honest, they would be worthless. But they are fair. And we strive to respect the effort it takes to put on a show Off-Off-Broadway, whatever the outcome.

There are some shows we don't review, as follows:

  • Student productions
  • Readings
  • Short plays in longer programs
  • One-shot productions

Also, "work by members" means work produced -- i.e., paid for -- by members. Press agents, landlords, and festival presenters who have only a peripheral relationship to a production should ask the producer -- the person who paid all the expenses -- to become a member. We take a close look at "co-productions." (We will make deals with festival promoters whose individual participants are not full-time members, if the plays are full-length separate entities, not one-acts sharing a bill. Interested parties should E-mail us at reviews @ oobr.com for details.)

What we do review is Off-Off-Broadway productions: Equity showcases in New York City, not just Manhattan, or non-union productions of equivalent budget.

To complete the membership process, make out a check to OOBR for $60 and mail it to:

Remember to tell us your mailing address, E-mail address*, phone number, and the name of your company!  If you have an upcoming production that you’d like us to review, include that as well, and we’ll make every effort to get a reviewer to attend your show.
