a group of playwrights joined to form a "playwrights circle," which would critique and develop new, original plays. Soon after, directors and actors joined to help prepare these works for staged readings. As a result of these staged readings, nine of the full-length plays went on to receive productions at venues including The 29th Street Playhouse, The Ohio Theatre, The Kraine, Stage II at the George Street Playhouse, and The Samuel Beckett - while several of the one acts went on to receive productions with companies such as The Village Gate, Primary Stages, Armory Plays, Waterline, and The Phoenix Ensemble, as well as two showcases the Waterfront Ensemble directly produced. In 1994..
this expanded group of playwrights, directors, and actors continued to come together weekly in Hoboken, New Jersey to read, critique, develop, and rehearse new plays. However, shifting the focus from "staged readings" to "workshop productions," the group began to produce off-off-Broadway on a regular basis.
Now...
the Waterfront Ensemble is a non-profit organization with more than 50 resident artists, which has produced five off-off-Broadway Equity showcase productions over the past two years. Plays developed with Waterfront also continue to gain awards and recognition in contests such as The One-Minute Play Contest, Nantucket Short Play Festival, Love Creek Contests - and publication resulting from both the Moving Arts One-Act Competition and the Samuel French Annual Short Play Festival.
Up ahead...
this December 10th-14th 1997 we will present our eighth showcase
- which will consist of two collections of short plays featuring
eight of our playwrights - at the Producers Club Theatre in Manhattan.
Then coming Spring 1998 we will begin a production series of new
full-length plays - and in Summer 1998: our ninth showcase of
new one act plays. More information on all events will be posted
on our web site to be published this January and in our newsletter
which will be arriving this Spring.
